The island of Tahiti is truly a mirror (flipped) image of Maui. Like Maui there are two distinct sections of the island, the larger side (Tahiti Nui) and the smaller side (Tahiti Iti). The entire chain of Society Islands are famously beautiful but there is a special rawness to the eastern end of Tahiti. Teahuopo and beyond the ‘end of the road’ is where dreams turn into reality.

1000 Peaks on the lower west side of Maui, Hawaii has become the defacto playground for Summer fun. But it wasn’t always the case. Prior to the mid nineties this stretch of coastline was an indicator of sorts as you drove past on your way to surf somewhere else. Today it’s a legitimate ‘roadside attraction’ for all things surf. It’s a training ground for the smallest of kids, the place where longboarders go to hone their flow game, and a go-to spot on any given summer swell.

There are surfing days where the stoke is unstoppable. When you are completely in sync with the ocean and lost in the moment. It’s these days where it is clear that surfing is much more than the sum of its parts. The waves we ride in Hawaii usually come from storms that are 1500 - 2000 miles away. The fact that we can tap into this unique energy simply for our pleasure is never lost on me.

Surfing isn’t a sport that begins and ends when you enter and leave the water. It’s a mindset, a culture, a society of its own. Here in Hawaii, its part of our language. The fabric of our community. It’s all that... and just a really fun thing to do.

My fascination with palm trees continues. What draws me to the palm tree as an art subject is that it can be two things at once. The individual leaves create a sense of chaos when exposed to the wind. While at the exact same time, the entirety of the palm, with its many fronds will sway in a uniform controlled dance. Giving off a sense of calm, serenity and composure.

Somewhere in the Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia) lies an atoll named Tikehau. On multiple trips to the region I have seen water that is unmatched in clarity, color and marine life. Tikehau and this particular island named Ninamu are great examples of what it looks like when life is left undisturbed.

Islanders share a special bond with each other and with the ocean. The ocean is often THE catalyst that holds a family or community together. While it would be easy to think that the ocean surrounding the Hawaiian Islands is what keeps us isolated, many of us believe that our far reaching waters is what keeps us connected to the rest of the world.

My respect and love for the ocean is deep. It has been a personal source of endless inspiration and a lifetime supply of sporting enjoyment.

My relentless curiosity plays right into my travel impluse. Images of empty islands and clear water catch my attention like a shiny new object. Add Google Earth to the mix and I’m immediately at the ready to board the next flight to a destination unknown.

But the truth is: even though I was born and raised in Hawaii, I’m still able to find stones unturned in my back yard. A real testament to the variation and diversity of the Hawaiian islands.

In 2008 I went with a friend to Tikehau on an exploratory surf trip. We stayed on a small motu (island) with another friend who was in the preliminary phase of building a series of humble yet high quality accommodations using the indigenous materials found on the surrounding motus. Every day we would surf in the mornings and collect coral, and local wood (the building materials) in the afternoon. We fished to supplement our provisions and we explored. The waters inside and outside of the atoll are nothing short of spectacular. Up until then, I had never seen such a dense collection of sharks sharing the shallow waters with every other sea creature imaginable. The region feels very untouched, unhurried, and the local population lives seamlessly with its beautiful nature. I have been back to the area many times…sometimes by boat. It still captivates me. Tikehau and the Tuamotus have been a significant resource for my art inspiration.

This piece of Maui's South Shore was partially painted while on vacation in the snowy Northeast. In fact the temp outside the studio was 21 degrees... which just happens to be the latitude (21 degrees north) for Maui, Hawaii.

This Tuamotu Skyline was a familiar sight on a recent sailing trip through the Tuamotus, in French Polynesia. Each atoll in the archipelago can contain hundreds of smaller motus (islands) within its surrounding reefs. Each with its own unique lagoons and palm lined interiors.

Namu is one of many atolls l in Micronesia that I had sailed through on my first trip to the Marshall Islands. The captain (whom I had not met prior to the trip) sent me an enticing email. He had offered me a berth on an exploratory trip through a remote group of islands, but could not divulge the exact coordinates of where we would be sailing. The cryptic offer had just the right amount of hook for me to reply with an “I’m all-in…” response. This is still one of my most memorable surf trips even today.

I’ve always lived on the windward side of the Hawaiian islands… where palm trees double as wind vanes. They are the 2nd most reliable wind indicator, right behind actually looking directly at the ocean conditions. If you surf or do any windsport these trees tell you exactly what’s going on with the weather.

Painting a palm is a bit like painting water. There is a certain chaos in the elements that borders on abstraction. In order to make sense of it you need to take a cue from the palm itself and just go with the flow.

On my second sailing trip in the Marshall Islands we anchored near this island for days. We arrived one day after the 2011 tsunami that rocked Japan. The entire Pacific was still experiencing fluctuating tides which were compounded by a natural king tide event. On the extreme lowest tides the backside of the island was the most spectacular salt water playground you could imagine.

“Maalaea is one of the worlds most elusive waves. It takes a very narrow combination of swell direction, wind condition, and tide to turn this wave into one of the wonders of the surf world. It’s fast and hollow and there are a band of surfers who are dedicated to tracking storms that will light up this reef. On this day the surf was absolutely firing but the winds were strong and unrelenting. One surfer paddled out and found a few diamonds in the rough.”-PC

Young Logan Bediamol represents surfing’s new guard on Maui’s North Shore. From an early age he’s shown skill and determination well beyond his years. In this depiction of Logan, his oversized big wave surfboard is an indication of where he has his sights set. A surfing career which is yet to unfold but full of promise.

The only thing was that this little island was uninhabited and that a boat was needed to get to it from wherever you were staying.
